JUSTICE FOR JANITORS CAMPAIGN

The more than 10,000 janitors who clean Boston-area office buildings are standing up for the American Dream.

These workers maintain more than 1,000 office buildings in downtown Boston and the suburbs.

While the owners of the buildings they clean are earning healthy profits, the janitors who keep them clean struggle to make ends meet.

Despite many profitable years for the real estate industry, janitors are paid as little as $39 a day. Because their salaries are so low and they are given only four hours of work each night, most janitors are forced to work two or three jobs to provide for their family.

NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION TO STOP GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD AT SUPERMARKETS

October 26-November 2

Mark your calendars now because we need every single person who doesn't want genetically engineered food to spend some time in front of their local supermarket this week. Local groups in Newton, Cambridge, Worcester, Bangor, Allston, Arlington/Watertown and others will be planning their events this month. See above listings for details about an event in one of these areas. If you don't in one of these communities and would like to organize an event in your area, call or email Linda at 617-338-8131 or [email protected]

Last year, the GE-Free Markets Coalition successfully pressured Trader Joe's, a national supermarket chain, to rid their store brands of GE ingredients. Consumer activism works! You can read more about GE foods at www.gefreemarkets.org

WHAT IS FIDELITY HIDING?

FIDELITY IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST mutual fund firm and a top shareholder of many scandal-ridden companies. Fidelity refuses to tell investors how it voted working families' immense stock holdings.

Did Fidelity use our voting power to prop up entrenched boards of directors, overpaid corporate executives and conflicted audit committees at troubled companies like: Enron, Kmart, Tyco, Halliburton, Lucent & WorldCom?

The SEC is considering new regulations to require mutual fund companies to come clean and disclose how they vote our shares. And Fidelity is trying to block this reform.

But Labor and Community are prepared to take them on. On December 4, 2002, in more than 20 cities around the country, union and community members will be knocking on the doors of Fidelity to tell them:

It's Our Money!
Stop fighting corporate reform.
Support accountability and mutual fund disclosure.
No More Business as Usual!

Join MA AFL-CIO President Bob Haynes and other labor and community leaders as they deliver our message to the CEO of Fidelity in Boston.

Wednesday, December 4 12:00-1:00PM
We will meet at the State St. MBTA station at the corner of Devonshire and State and then walk down to the headquarters of Fidelity at 82 Devonshire St. Boston.

Visit www.aflcio.org/fidelitydisclose for a report on how Fidelity shareholder votes could have made a difference.

The AFL-CIO has no direct labor dispute with Fidelity. We are not asking anyone to cease performing any services for or to cease handling any products or materials of Fidelity or any other employer.

For more information call the MA AFL-CIO at 617-227-8260.
