The Himalayan Trust was set up in 1993 in response to the need expressed by a group of grassroots social workers and environmental professionals working in the Western Himalayan region, to join together under an umbrella organization to collectively address critical issues of environmental degradation and increasing impoverishment of mountain communities in the Himalaya. Inspired and supported in its endeavours by Swami Chidananda of Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, the Trust’s objectives are to fulfill the development aspirations of the small, isolated mountain communities, while safeguarding their ecological resource base, and their cultural and spiritual heritage.
