The Himalaya Trust recognises that the impoverishment of mountain people of the Western Himalaya is inextricably linked with the impoverishment of their fragile habitat, particularly the destruction of the natural forests which play a crucial role in protecting the soil and water, and provide basic resources for human survival. To reverse this alarming trend (which official planning has failed to address effectively), the Trust will, in its chosen areas of work, act through and energise local village communities and institutions to work towards rehabilitating degraded land and water resources through conservation and regeneration of vegetation cover, improvement of the biodiversity status of critical micro-watersheds, and support for measures that contribute to community well-being through innovative social and economic mechanisms. The HTs interventions, while arising from and primarily reflecting local priorities and concerns, will attempt to promote a holistic and integrative interpretation of objectives with a bearing on long-term intra-generational ecological security. Through its programmes and activities in the field, the Himalaya Trust will, at all times, place the community at the centre of its agenda, enabling it to define its own vision of the future, and articulate and achieve its own developmental priorities.
