The Himalayan Trust encourages any initiative which address both the human and ecological dimensions of resource management, and its sustainable use for enhancing the quality of life of mountain people. It acts primarily as a catalyst and facilitating body to support grassroots initiatives, with a strong emphasis on capacity building and human resource development. The Himalaya Trust extends professional guidance and financial support for locally viable and sustainable projects proposed by local groups, drawing upon its network of resource persons, organizations and institutions to enable the identified group to increase its livelihood options and secure its environmental resource base. Through its training courses and capability building interventions, it aims to encourage and develop group leadership management and organisational qualities in promising individuals at all levels of the community. It consequently places great importance on group projects which enhance community awareness and self-confidence, particularly targeting young adults who are potential migrants from the area, providing them with alternative opportunities through meaningful local projects. The Himalaya Trust supports community-based projects which stimulate economic and social activity in its project area, and accords high priority to projects designed specially for women. It helps to identify and support the work of women with special skills and aptitudes, provides professional training wherever necessary, and gives importance to social action which empowers women and enables them to move towards economic self-sufficiency and self-reliance through their own inherent skills and potential. HT also encourages and supports adaptative and innovative use of traditional skills and technology which are ecologically or culturally relevant and contribute towards improved livelihoods through sustainable resource use and management. HTs concern extends to the rapid loss of indigenous knowledge systems and traditional wisdom. Through study and documentation, HT will assist village groups to plan and develop appropriate and relevant developmental objectives, to prepare inventories of bio-resource availability, and plan and work towards the enhancement of communities access to natural resources. Through reinforcement and validation the continuing relevance of indigenous knowledge, HT will develop awareness creation programmes, emphasising the importance of local wisdom and community history as a living tradition.
