Will Mergers Within the Travel Industry Be Good for the Customer?

The recession started as far back as 2008 and since this date UK companies involved in providing foreign travel have seen significant reductions in volumes which has unfortunately seen a spate of smaller travel companies go to the wall.

The depth of this recession is best demonstrated by the reduction in passenger numbers seen at UK airports. The overall reduction was 7% for 2009 following on from a 2% reduction in 2008 and these figures due not in themselves give a true picture of the falls seen at airports where the majority of their traffic is made up by holidaymakers.

Stansted 10.7%

Manchester 11.5%

East Midlands 17.2%

Heathrow 1.5%

Gatwick 5.3%

Both Heathrow and Gatwick have fared better because business customers form a higher percentage of their traffic and they have more long haul flights.

Falls at Stansted, Manchester and East Midlands are quite staggering and it is little wonder against this background, we have seen in recent months BA merge with the Spanish flag carrier Iberia and Thomas Cook and The Co-operative Travel merge to form the largest retail chain in the UK.

Usually, Unions take a very negative view on such mergers because job losses are inevitable but the response has been quite the opposite and reflects the view that closures would be greater if they remained independent.
