Few women have done so much for so many, as Qamer Soni did. A very few have dedicated their life towards the welfare of the aged, sick, children, women, and the weak. She always stood up for their rightful cause.
After graduation, she joined the Red Cross, and later worked as labour welfare officer in the India United and Bombay Dyeing Textile Mills. She did a course in Labour management in Japan, USA, and Europe. Articles on her appeared in the fifties when very few women came out to work, in French, American, and German magazines. She continued to do the social work in the Army after her marriage to an Army officer. Being interested in the work, she helped to start a Health centre, Mahila Mandal, sewing, knitting, and literacy classes in the Doon Valley.
Though self-taught, she came to know a lot about farming by visiting Taiwan, the Philippines, and Europe and studying their methods. She came to be a member of the board of management of Pant Nagar University and a part of the council of Agricultural Research. Several articles on her work appeared in regional magazines and papers. A serial was made on her and telecast on Doordarshan during prime time, in STRI in 1987.
Roorkee was her first love, and she always wanted to do something for the weak, aged, widows, handicapped, and the orphans and establish a home for those who need help. Unfortunately, she left us before her dreams came true. There can be no better memorial than to do the same work she always cherished, through this Trust.
The Trust has already been recognized by the Government of India, by appointing two serving officers, as trustees "On appointment basis" to ensure smooth continuity of its work and functioning.
The Foundation wishes to attract the support of the largest number of people. All contributions, however small, are therefore welcome to make this venture a success, not only for those who need help and rehabilitation, mainly in the Bengal Sappers and in the Army, but also others who need such help.
